The most important part ofsandalwood is heartwood present chiefly in roots of its tree.Sapwood produces lower quality oil. The older the tree the bestheartwood we will get from it. For each extraction technique, thequality of the wood determines the quality of the final sandalwoodoil. Sandalwood oil is extracted mostly by steam distillation, inthis process super heated steam is passed through the powderedwood. The steam then caries the oil locked inside the cellularstructure of the wood. After the steam has been cooled we getsandalwood hydrosol and sandalwood oil.
sandalwood trees are grown in huge number suchas Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Thesesandalwood trees are found in large number in the forests of thesestates. Apart from these regions, these trees are also available inplenty at the Timor Islands of Indonesia. It is somethinginteresting to see how the sandalwood oil is extracted out of thefull grown tree. Sandalwood oil is usually found in the roots ofthe trees.
